Question 1

What is a relaxing song?

Accepted Answer

A song that helps you slow down. The ones that tend to work are soft, low-energy, fairly acoustic and steady — nothing that jumps out at you. Every song here was measured for those things.

Question 2

Are these songs free?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Stream them here or download them as MP3, free. They are licensed CC BY 4.0, so you can use them in videos and streams with credit too.

Question 3

Can I use a relaxing song in my YouTube video or livestream?

Accepted Answer

Yes, with credit, on YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Twitch, Facebook, X and other social media, livestreams included. Credit: “Music by Purrple Cat”. The one thing you can’t do is upload the music, or remixes, samples or covers of it, to music streaming services like Spotify, Apple Music or YouTube Music.

Question 4

Do the songs have lyrics?

Accepted Answer

No. Everything in this herbarium is instrumental, so nothing pulls your attention towards words.

Question 5

Is this music made with AI?

Accepted Answer

No.

Question 6

Who is Purrple Cat?

Accepted Answer

A solo lofi project that started in December 2018 with Up All Night. Since then: 500+ songs, 500M+ streams and 425K followers. Mostly instrumental, and every self-released record is free under CC BY 4.0.

Question 7

How were the songs chosen?

Accepted Answer

From measured audio features: lower energy, higher acousticness, a gentle valence and a calm score (soft attacks, steady level, warm tone). Song titles never kept a track out — if it sounded soft enough, it went in.

Question 8

Why a herbarium?

Accepted Answer

A herbarium presses a flower flat so it lasts. A relaxing song works the same way: one song, kept close, played until it settles. Each specimen here is a full Purrple Cat track you can leave on.
